  Spiritual Direction

What is spiritual direction?

Spiritual direction is a little like spiritual coaching. I am a companion who walks with you on your spiritual path to provide support and guidance along the way. As a spiritual director I help you explore the sacred dimensions of your everyday experience and identify the ways in which the Divine manifests in your life.

Is spiritual direction psychotherapy?

No. Spiritual directors do not diagnose or treat mental illness or provide practical solutions to problems. We may explore relationships, work, trauma, losses or other experiences, as well as religious or spiritual issues. The focus is on the spiritual dimensions of these concerns and problems and how they may help us grow spiritually. Many people find that spiritual direction works well in combination with psychotherapy.

What happens in a spiritual direction session?

A spiritual direction session includes silence and reflection as well as active conversation. We may use writing, movement, art work or other expressive activities as well. As a spiritual director, I practice "holy listening," looking and listening for signs of God's presence and the spiritual dimensions of your experience. We typically meet every 3-4 weeks. You will also be asked to commit to some form of regular spiritual practice between sessions.

Do I need to believe in God to participate in spiritual direction?

No. I work with people from all failth traditions as well as those who do not believe in God. The only requirement is an interest and willingness to explore your connection to that which is greater than yourself and that which gives your life meaning and purpose, however you understand this.

Is spiritual direction for me?

If you are interested in exploring these questions, you might consider spiritual direction:

What is happening in your spiritual life?
What people or experiences connect you with the meaning or hope for your life?
What connects you to a sense of creativity, meaning or purpose?
Do you feel abandoned by God, angry at God, or wonder whether God exists?
How are you connecting with or shutting out God at this time in your life?
Have you had experiences, losses or traumas that have made you feel disconnected from God?
